PC4713 split-phase (two-phase) wiring

PC4713-W, PC4713-W-485 (and the -TY / -E-TY variants)

The North American residential arrangement: two live legs and a neutral, one CT per leg. The meter reports both legs and the total.

Isolate the supply before touching any conductor. Wire colours in the clip are the demo panel's, not a requirement.

Step by step

  1. 1 Isolate the main breaker and prove all conductors dead.
  2. 2 Clip CT1 on leg L1 and CT2 on leg L2, both arrows towards the loads.
  3. 3 Land L1 on A, L2 on B and the neutral on N.
  4. 4 Land CT1 on IA+ / IA- and CT2 on IB+ / IB-.
  5. 5 Restore power and check that both legs read voltage and current.

Terminal reference

Power block N/C/B/A
A = leg L1, B = leg L2, N = neutral. C unused.
CT block IA+ IA-
Secondary of CT1, the clamp on leg L1.
CT block IB+ IB-
Secondary of CT2, the clamp on leg L2.

Before you start

  • Both legs are live with respect to the neutral; isolate both before wiring.
  • Keep each leg with its own CT: swapping the clamps swaps the legs in the data.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the two legs as phases of a three-phase system: the meter will not report a valid three-phase set.
  • Clamping the neutral to measure the second leg: the sum of the two legs is what the neutral carries.
